PROPERTIES > THE SONJA
The Sonja is named in honor of the Sons of Norway Sonja Lodge, which occupied the building site prior to the acquisition by Paradigm in 2009. The Sons of Norway met in various locations around Eugene until 1947, when they purchased an old fraternity house located a half-block from the University of Oregon campus and converted it into their lodge. Here, they held celebrations, feasts, meetings, and social gatherings to celebrate and preserve the culture and heritage of Norway. The Sonja pays homage to the history of the Sonja Lodge not just through the name, but with architectural features as well. The entry awning is a modern translation of the original lodge design, the windows feature a design reminiscent of the Norwegian flag, and the interior courtyard of the building is shaped like a Viking ship’s hull.
The Sonja was sold in 2014.
